As winter sets in and we see an uptick in snowy weather, our roads can quickly transform into icy challenges that test even the most experienced drivers. I urge all our community members to prioritize safety and adopt careful driving practices during snowy weather.
First and foremost, it is crucial to prepare your vehicle for winter conditions. Ensure your tires are adequately inflated and have sufficient tread. Consider switching to winter tires for better traction on snow and ice. Don’t forget to check your battery, brakes, and windshield wipers to ensure they’re functioning correctly. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, water, a flashlight, a shovel, and non-perishable snacks.
When it comes time to drive, slow and steady wins the race. Reduced speed is essential in wintry conditions. Icy patches can be treacherous, and stopping distances are significantly longer when roads are slippery. Maintain a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you; this allows ample time to respond in the event of an emergency.
If you find yourself skidding, do not panic. Remain calm, steer in the direction you want to go, and avoid slamming on the brakes, which could worsen the skid. Instead, gently ease off the accelerator until you regain control.
Visibility is another vital aspect of winter driving. Snow, sleet, and fog can severely limit your ability to see and be seen. Always use your headlights in snowy conditions and clear all snow and ice from your vehicle before heading out to ensure you have a full view of your surroundings.
If you do get into a vehicle crash it may be safer to stay in your vehicle and call for help. Other drivers may not see you standing outside of your vehicle and could hit you. If it is safe to do so, attempt to pull your vehicle out of the traffic lane to a safer location.
Lastly, consider whether your trip is necessary. If conditions are severe, stay home and wait for the roads to clear. By staying informed and cautious, we can all enjoy a safe winter season.
Drive safely, and let’s work together to ensure our community remains safe this winter.
