Did you know, on the late afternoon of December 24th, as staff was finishing up bedding down the animals for the night, eager to get home to their families for the holiday, a person arrived at our door with three little Yorkshire Terriers in a small cage? The person claimed she found them somewhere between Monroe and Blooming Grove and no other shelter was open so she brought them to Warwick. It was suspicious that she couldn’t tell us where she “found” them. Her story was she had them for a couple of days and then told us two weeks. Clearly these were her dogs that she just didn’t want or couldn’t care for anymore. With nowhere else to go, we offered shelter to “Joey, Mari & Jesse” on this freezing cold night on Christmas Eve.
One of the dogs had a microchip which led us to his breeder in the Bronx. She knew right away who the dog was and who she sold him to for $1200.00!!! It was the same person who lied to us. The breeder wanted the dog back, but he was not up to date on his rabies vaccination so there would be the impoundment fee plus the vaccine fee. She decided to relinquish him to the shelter because she didn’t want to pay $155.00 to redeem him. Fortunately for Joey, he will have the chance to become a pet and not be used to breed ever again.
All three little dogs are badly underweight and dirty. The person who bought Joey had the money to buy him but not care for him? Yorkies are in high demand, but these three will need to gain weight, be groomed, examined and of course, spayed and neutered before they are available for adoption. Their unexpected intake caused a delay in the staff going home as planned, but the animals come first. On the eve of the 24th of December, Joey, Mari and little Jesse had a safe, warm place to begin their new lives.
The day after Christmas an unwanted 12 year old female cat was surrendered for inappropriate bathroom behavior that ruined the floors in the home. The same cat that the person threatened to shoot two weeks ago if we didn’t take her. We were told she had been to the vet who thought it might be diabetes. That was three months ago and the family declined basic bloodwork and any diagnostics. The vet gave her an antibiotic injection in the hopes it would help, but without knowing what was being treated, it was a shot in the dark. 12 years as a family pet and the day after Christmas she’s booted out of the house. Now she sits in a small cage, surrounded by other cats and unaccustomed noises and smells being cared for by strangers.
“A cat does not want all the world to love her—only those she has chosen to love.”
