Charismatic, Uplifting, encouraging, peacemaker, inspirational, visionary, mentor, philanthropist, humanitarian, altruistic, compassionate, kind, loving… a man of great faith and positivity … These are just a few of the adjectives that describe Leo Kaytes Sr.
His legacy is not merely defined by his accomplishments, but by the warmth of his spirit, the unwavering support he offered to all, and the indelible mark he left on every life he touched. Leo had a quiet dignity, respecting himself the way he respected others. Leo was a teacher of all things. His method was simple. He taught by example. When faced with an ethical dilemma, after reflection, study, or even rationalization, we who were touched by Leo’s words would find ourselves coming back to one simple question. What would Leo do? His character was the foundation he shared with all the lives he touched, and we all felt the same… he was our Priest, our father figure and all with great respect and reverence. Leo never made an enemy. Nary a negative word was ever uttered in regard to Leo. He treated all with respect and kindness no matter their station in life. Leo loved his wife Gladys with every bone in his body. When Gladys was in rehab after her knee operation, there sat Leo every waking moment by her side. A love we all wish for and hope for. Leo and Gladys were the epitome of a loving, respectful marriage and steadfast commitment to each other and their family and friends. Leo had an infectious optimism and as we remember Leo and we shall every day, we also want to give thanks that we were touched by his unconditional friendship. Frank and I broke down Monday morning reading his Eulogy on the air. It was the moment when we had to admit that he was not with us as we always felt Leo was immortal. I just spoke with him a week ago and we were laughing about so many stories, and he was thankful that Leo R. had joined Bill Iurato and Michael Sweeton in their annual tribute to his best friend for many years till his passing, Dick Wells. Leo R. the heir apparent, who he adored and treasured as he did all his children and grandchildren and great grandchildren and so forth. Thanksgiving was truly a day to give thanks when you looked around the table of the Kaytes family packed in, laughing, sharing stories and just in heaven being together. I always loved his stories of those holidays. Leo’s indelible mark is here for eternity. It is handed down to each generation, so Leo lives in all of us. Remember that legacy as you go forth into the world. Do Leo proud! We see Leo and Gladys dancing together looking down at us and reminding us to do the right thing. We love you Leo and you shall forever be in our hearts and souls and minds. God Bless you Leo!
