STATEMENT FROM SENATOR JAMES SKOUFIS

Politics

Within our communities is a force I have watched flourish for years. A group of people with exceptional drive and ambition. Residents who are curious, tuned in, and willing to put in work to enact change. This force is the youth in Orange County.

Though not yet part of the voting population, I know firsthand that teens can play a significant role in government. The teens I’ve been privileged to work with over the years have been insightful and wise, voicing concerns about the environment, school funding, public transportation, internet safety, mental health, and the rising cost of living in a world into which they are about to launch. They know they have power and insight, but they need support.

Providing outlets for learning, experience, and discussion for teens across Orange County has been one of my priorities in office, and my Youth Advisory Council serves as the place where teens have a seat at the table of government conversation.

Younger demographics are statistically more likely to vote when they have engaged in government before they turn 18, and there are so many ways to get involved. New York residents can pre-register to vote at 16, and that’s just the start: attending town and school board meetings and speaking up when issues arise, volunteering on campaigns or within the community, advocating in their schools on issues affecting them, and reaching out to their representatives both on issues and to seek out internships and council positions.

Understanding how society and government works empowers teens and creates community-minded citizens who will continue to hone their voices. If you are – or have someone in your life – who is looking for a way to make an impact, find a path. Apply for an internship, join a community initiative, or register to vote. We need those voices, now more than ever.
