Don’t Let Scammers Steal Your Holiday Cheer

Politics

Cybercriminals take advantage of the holiday season by increasing phishing attempts, scams, and other fraudulent activity targeting consumers.  It’s important to remain vigilant and keep a lookout for scammers who seek to prey on consumers during the holiday season. Online shoppers should protect themselves by following a simple set of tips both year-round and during the holiday season.  It is recommended that shoppers stick to reputable retailers and always verify website URLs before entering payment details.  Also, when buying items from a website, make sure the company has an operating customer service number, lists an actual street address of its business, and has a record of satisfactory service. Consumers are warned to be cautious of emails with subject lines like “Exclusive Holiday Deals” or “Free Gift Cards.” These are often phishing attempts and when possible, avoid public Wi-Fi when making online purchases.  Shopping from your home network is much safer. Shoppers are also advised to verify the sender before opening links or attachments on e-cards or invitations. Consumers are also encouraged to use the resources and security features provided by credit card companies.  If you believe you have been charged for an item that you did not authorize or have not received in a reasonable amount of time, report this to your credit card company immediately. Finally, the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has resources and assistance available to anyone who suspects they are a victim of a scam.  Reports can be submitted both online or by calling the OAG at 1-800-771-7755.
