PROTECTING OUR COMMUNITY AMIDST WILDFIRE THREAT

Politics

A Column from the Desk of Assemblyman Karl Brabenec (R,C-Deerpark)

This past week, our community has faced a formidable challenge as wildfires swept through parts of Rockland and Orange Counties, with the village of Greenwood Lake bearing a significant impact. The Jennings Creek Wildfire, originating in Passaic County, New Jersey, rapidly spread to Sterling Forest in Greenwood Lake, consuming over 3,000 acres and threatening numerous homes. In the face of this adversity, our local heroes have demonstrated extraordinary courage and dedication. Volunteer firefighters from both New York and New Jersey have worked tirelessly, often through the night, to protect our homes and natural resources. Their unwavering commitment to safeguarding our community is a testament to the strength and resilience that define us.

Tragically, we mourn the loss of 18-year-old Dariel Vasquez, a Parks and Recreation Aid with the New York State Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation Department. Dariel was fatally injured by a falling tree while battling the blaze in Sterling Forest.  A senior at Ramapo High School and captain of the baseball team, Dariel was a young man full of promise, hope, and dedication. His selfless service and ultimate sacrifice will forever be remembered, and our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. These fires were intensified by the record dry spell our area has experienced. With little to no rain in the forecast, it’s more important than ever to remain vigilant and follow a few common-sense steps to prevent new fires.

  • No Burning Allowed – Orange County currently has a burn ban in place. Avoid any open fires or burning of yard debris.
  • Dispose of Cigarette Butts Properly – Be sure all cigarette butts are extinguished and never discarded on the ground or near vegetation.
  • Clear Yard Debris – Remove dead leaves, branches, and other potential fire fuel around your home.
  • Be Cautious with Outdoor Equipment – Avoid using equipment that could create sparks, especially near dry brush or grass.
  • Report Brush Fires – If you see a brush fire call 9-1-1 immediately to report it. Don’t just assume someone else has done so.

By following these steps, we can all help protect our beautiful community and honor those working tirelessly to keep us safe. In the aftermath of this disaster, our community’s resilience shines through. Neighbors have come together to support one another, and the outpouring of assistance underscores the unity that defines us. As your Assemblyman, I am committed to working alongside local and state agencies to ensure we have the resources and strategies necessary to prevent future tragedies. Stay safe, and may we continue to support one another in the days ahead.
