Pine Island Chamber Honors John Lashuay and Angel Gualan for Community Dedication

Pine Island, NY – The Pine Island Chamber of Commerce proudly announced this year’s recipients of its Citizen of the Year and Youth Achievement awards, honoring two individuals whose dedication has made a lasting impact on the Pine Island and Warwick communities.

Citizen of the Year: John Lashuay
John Lashuay has been named the 2024 Pine Island Citizen of the Year, a well-deserved recognition for his countless contributions to the community. As a volunteer firefighter, Lashuay is among the top 3% of responders, consistently answering calls over the past three years. Recently, he completed over 150 hours of state fire training to become an interior firefighter, further deepening his commitment to public safety.

In addition to his work with the fire department, John is an active member of the PTA, a dedicated youth soccer coach, and a pastor at Pine Island Bible Church, where he has served for fifteen years. Each year, his church organizes a 9/11 Memorial Service and First Responders Appreciation Day, hosting a lunch at the firehouse to honor local heroes. “John has been on our radar for several years, and we are proud to honor him,” said the Chamber in a statement.

Youth Achievement Award: Angel Gualan
Angel Gualan, a senior at Warwick Valley High School, has been awarded the 2024 Youth Achievement Award for his volunteer efforts and commitment to public service. Gualan has devoted his time to the Warwick Area Farmworker Organization, the Alamo Community Center, and Dulce Esperanza summer camp. He completed the Warwick Police Department’s Junior Academy and has been involved in the WAFO Boys Club for three years.

This summer, Angel earned a certification from Morehouse Medical School’s community health program for young adults, marking another step in his goal to pursue a career in law enforcement. He hopes to attend SUNY Oneonta and eventually serve as a police officer.
