At the 2024 Las Vegas Formula 1 night Grand Prix, Max Verstappen officially became a four-time world champion, finishing fifth in a thrilling race. Meanwhile, the Mercedes team secured its first victory since July, clinching a one-two finish thanks to George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.
Verstappen’s Path to the Title
Verstappen needed only to finish ahead of his main rival, Lando Norris, to secure the championship. The Dutchman made a confident start, held his position, and, despite intense battles in the first half of the race, opted not to take risks in the final laps. When Ferrari drivers Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc closed in, Verstappen allowed them to pass without contention, focusing on his primary goal — winning the title.
“The season has been long. We started very strong but faced challenges later. Still, the team kept pushing, and we achieved our goal. Four consecutive championships — it’s unbelievable,” Verstappen commented after the race.
Mercedes’ Victory Performance
George Russell delivered a masterclass performance, winning the race from pole position. He maintained his lead despite early pressure from Leclerc and controlled the pace until the finish. Lewis Hamilton, starting from tenth, showcased one of his best drives of the season, climbing to second place. This victory marked Mercedes’ first win since July, highlighting the team’s resurgence after a string of setbacks.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised Russell’s performance, calling it “driving from another planet.”
Ferrari on the Podium, Red Bull Struggles
Carlos Sainz finished third, securing valuable points for Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship battle. Charles Leclerc, despite early tire issues, came in fourth. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri received a penalty for a false start, complicating his chances for a high finish, while Lando Norris managed the fastest lap and a sixth-place finish for the team.
Sergio Pérez of Red Bull finished tenth, adding just one point to the team’s tally. Red Bull’s chief engineer Christian Horner described this season for Verstappen as “his greatest and most challenging,” placing him among Formula 1’s greatest champions.
A Dramatic Race in Las Vegas
The Las Vegas Grand Prix was one of the season’s most exciting races. On a cold and slippery track, drivers showcased daring maneuvers. Pérez executed a double overtake on Kevin Magnussen and Liam Lawson, while Pierre Gasly of Alpine, starting third, was forced to retire due to technical issues, dealing a blow to the team’s Constructors’ Championship hopes.
Other highlights included the opening battle between Norris and Verstappen, Hamilton’s brilliant recovery drive, and the strategic decisions that shaped the race. Williams also had a bittersweet moment as Franco Colapinto managed to finish the race following a crash, although the team lost Alexander Albon due to technical failures.
Season Finale
Russell, Hamilton, and Sainz celebrated their podium finishes under the dazzling Las Vegas lights. Verstappen, meanwhile, joined his Red Bull team in celebrating his achievement, solidifying his status among Formula 1’s legendary champions.
This season proved that Formula 1 remains unpredictable, intense, and captivating. With Mercedes gaining momentum, Ferrari’s consistency, and new challenges for Red Bull, the next season promises to be just as exciting.
