FOOTBALL

The Warwick Valley Wildcats varsity football team defeated Class A opponent Our Lady of Lourdes in Poughkeepsie on Friday night by a score of 42-30.

Wildcats quarterback Brody Frederick led the team to the win, completing 12 of 18 passes for 441 yards and four touchdown passes, while also rushing for two. Ryan and Dylan Sullivan continue to rack up the yardage, combining for 339 yards and four touchdown receptions. Anthony Mazza and Giacomo Abbate also combined for 102 receiving yards.

The offensive line of Michael Hennessy, Matt Lupkovich, Brayden Harrison, Grant Havell, Michael Miller, Asa Garner, and Wyatt Vreeland was stellar, providing plenty of time for Frederick to throw, and keeping the QB’s jersey clean throughout the game.

The Wildcats defense was paced by senior captain Grant Havell, who led all tacklers with nine solo tackles and three assists. Michael Miller was outstanding from the defensive line, and defensive back Luca Siebert converted his fourth interception of the year in the end zone during the first half. Wyatt Vreeland also intercepted a pass to set the Wildcats up in scoring position. Wildcats kicker Cole Haskew was a perfect 6-6 on extra point attempts, and has been near perfect on attempted extra points this year, with 18.

Underclassman Aaron Callender, Giacomo Abbate, Tom Ronan, Matt Abel, and Logan Conley complement a senior-laden team, and have made significant contributions to the Wildcats 4-0 start this season. Warwick will look to maintain their perfect record on Friday night, when they take on FDR in Hyde Park. Kick off will be at 7:00 pm for this important league contest.

GIRLS TENNIS

Undefeated Warwick recorded a 7-0 victory over Liberty and a 5-1 win over Washingtonville as the Wildcats ran their record to 7-0 on the season.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

The Warwick cross country Purple Wave played host to state-ranked powerhouses Monroe-Woodbury and Cornwall on the famed 3.09 mile course at Sanfordville Elementary School on Sept. 24.   The boys took defeats to both M-W (18-45) and Cornwall (23-32), but again improved as a team for the fastest time on this course for a five-man average this season.

Top man Leo Shostal paced his teammates to a personal best of 16:13.4, while RJ Dovico, Collin Freet, AJ Kobrick and Liam Astbury rounded out the top 5.  The boys team moves to a 4-2 record with the Division Championship on the line at Washingtonville on Tuesday, Oct, 1. The Wildcats will then travel to Brewster High School on Saturday Oct. 5, to compete in the 50-team Brewster Bear Invitational.  Go Wildcats!

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

The Warwick girls cross country team took on the Cornwall Lady Green Dragons and the Monroe-Woodbury Lady Crusaders for a non-divisional OCIAA league meet on Sept. 24.  All of the teams highly anticipated the meet as the three squads will be in contention for the OCIAA Championship crown, which will be decided on Oct. 26, 2024, on the same Sanfordville Elementary School course.

Cornwall defeated both teams head-to-head, and the Lady Wildcats lost to Monroe Woodbury by a narrow margin of 3 points, 26-29.  Many gutsy performances were turned in by the Lady Cats.  Senior runner Alexa Keys ran a personal best time 20:28.9 over the 3.09-mile course.  Junior Madison Olszewski had a breakthrough day and crossed the finish line in 19:58.1.

The Lady Cats will get their chance to run against these teams later in the season.  Both boys and girls cross Country teams will be at Washingtonville High School on Tuesday, Oct. 1, competing in a Division 2 showdown.  Go Wildcats!

 GIRLS SWIMMING

The Warwick girls swimming and diving team defeated Goshen 97-89  for their third straight victory. The team combined for eight PRs and one season-best time. The Wildcats had four first-place finishes, nine second-place finishes and six third-place finishes against a young and strong Goshen team.

During the offseason multiple swimmers from both teams train and compete for the same club team. Like football these athletes exchange “jerseys” in the form of swim caps.
