STATEMENT FROM SENATOR JAMES SKOUFIS

Politics

I wanted to take a moment to share some exciting news regarding the Empire State Child Tax Credit (ESCC). In this year’s budget, I – alongside like-minded colleagues – secured $350 million for a new supplemental tax credit. These funds will be directed towards families eligible for the ESCC, providing relief and uplift for children and hard-working families. In Orange County alone, this program will directly help over 30,000 kids, with an average payment of $240 per child.

The ESCC is essential for families just starting out. Research shows child tax credits help to reduce childhood hunger and poverty, while improving physical, emotional, and behavioral health. As we’re getting back-to-school with an increased cost of living, this additional check will give families the help they need to start the school year right.

No sign up is required, those who qualified for the ESCC in 2023 and filed their taxes on time will automatically receive a check – the first round was mailed in August, with all families expected to get their checks by the end of this month. I was proud to go to bat for this funding – Orange County kids and families are worth the fight.
