STATEMENT FROM SENATOR JAMES SKOUFIS

Politics

As we approach the anniversary of the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, it’s hard to believe it’s been 23 years since that fateful day. Many active first responders weren’t even born when it occurred. But, it still looms large in our national history, and it remains important to take the time to soberly reflect back on the events of 9/11.

In many ways it changed so much about our country – from the way we moved through the airport to our diplomatic relationships around the world. In other – more telling – ways, these events showed exactly what it was to be American: New Yorkers lined up to donate blood and supplies to those who had been injured and displaced. Americans around the country checked in and supported one another. There was a surge of enlistment in the military in the year following, demonstrating that – rather than making people afraid – the attacks upon American soil had only strengthened a resolve to defend our country.

We committed as a nation and as the State of New York to never forget, and whether 23 years feels like a lifetime or only a moment ago, I hope we can all take time this week to remember the significance of September 11 and all the brave men and women who lost their lives. It’s important to remember this day, and all the days that have made us free.
