With a population of over 400,000 residents, including both urban and rural areas, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and local police departments have had to adapt to meet the needs of all the communities that comprise our county.

One major focus of policing in the 21st century is community policing. This approach emphasizes building relationships and trust with the community to prevent crime and enhance public safety. Deputies are encouraged to work closely with residents, businesses, and community organizations to address issues and concerns in a collaborative way.

Advancements in technology have also played a significant role in policing Orange County. Many law enforcement agencies now use body cameras to provide transparency and accountability in their interactions with the public. Our Deputies all patrol with body cameras and we will be deploying body cams in the Orange County Jail soon. Additionally, digital communication tools and social media platforms are used to disseminate information quickly and efficiently, as well as to engage with community members.

Another important aspect of policing in the 21st century is providing training programs that now include cultural competency and implicit bias training to ensure that officers are equipped to interact respectfully with all individuals. Patrolling our communities throughout Orange County is no one size fits all and equipping our staff with training that enables us to address needs in different communities respectfully.

In response to the opioid crisis and rising rates of substance abuse, policing in Orange County has also placed an increased focus on addressing mental health and addiction issues. Many of our deputies and correction officers are now trained in crisis intervention techniques and are equipped with naloxone to respond to overdoses and save lives. We also employ the Orange County Drug Task Force comprised of the Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office and local police to help slow the flow of illegal drugs through our County.

Overall, policing in Orange County, NY in the 21st century is adapting to the changing needs and demands of the community. Through a focus on community policing, technological advancements, and addressing social issues, your Sheriff’s Office is working to build trust and strengthen relationships with residents to create a safer community for all.
