The school bus is a commonly used mode of transportation for students, but there are precautions that both drivers and students should keep in mind to ensure a safe journey to and from school.

First and foremost, it is crucial for drivers to follow all traffic laws, especially when it comes to school buses. When a school bus stops to pick up or drop off students, drivers must come to a complete stop and wait until the bus resumes motion. It’s against the law to pass a stopped school bus with its lights flashing and stop sign extended, as children may be in the process of crossing the street.

The New York Association for Pupil Transportation reports that during each school day in New York 50,000 vehicles pass stopped school buses that have their red lights flashing. Several school districts in Orange County use buses equipped with cameras that record these infractions and traffic fines are mailed to the vehicle registrant. Please be attentive when you see that big yellow bus that is oncoming or right in front of you there are children who count on you to do so.

For students, following school bus safety rules is equally important. Students should arrive at their bus stops early and stand a safe distance away from the road while waiting. When boarding the bus, students should walk in an orderly fashion and find a seat quickly. It is important to stay seated while the bus is in motion and follow any instructions given by the bus driver.

In addition to school bus safety, overall school safety is also a top priority. Schools have protocols in place to ensure the safety of students and staff in case of emergencies, such as fire drills, lockdown drills, and evacuation plans. It is important for students to familiarize themselves with these protocols and take them seriously.

Bullying is another concern when it comes to school safety. Students should feel comfortable reporting any instances of bullying to a trusted adult, whether it be a teacher, school counselor, or parent. Schools have anti-bullying policies in place to prevent and address bullying behavior.

School bus safety and school safety go hand in hand in ensuring a secure learning environment for students. By following the rules and protocols in place, both drivers and students can contribute to a safe and positive school experience. For more information on school safety go to nysed.gov.
