The Florida Chamber of Commerce celebrated our hometown star, Jimmy Sturr, by hosting an event at his home on Maple Avenue. The celebrated 18-time Grammy Award-winning artist (with 24 nominations) welcomed attendees to his yard, where they were seated around the pool to learn about Jimmy’s upbringing—just across the street from where he lives now.

Guests heard stories of his early years at S.S. Seward Institute, where he played his first event at age 11 for the PTA. As Jimmy sat in front of several of his Grammy awards, he shared tales of his musical journey, including playing instruments like the clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and piano, and forming his first band, “The Melody Makers.” He also reminisced about friends in town, his family history, sports, his time at Valley Forge Military Academy, and his subsequent military service.

Jimmy answered questions posed by committee members Dorothy Myers and Donna Benson, including stories of his appearance at the Grand Ole Opry—where he made history as the first full band/orchestra to take the stage. He shared how he invited Willie Nelson to join him after getting the green light from the Opry, which led to collaborations with Willie Nelson, Boots Randolph, Al Martino, Myron Floren, and many other artists.

He also recounted fond memories of spending time with Phil Niekro of the New York Yankees, who stayed with him and visited his home in West Virginia. Nostalgic reflections continued with stories of performances at various places and events, including a cherished New Year’s Eve in Germany. Additionally, Jimmy’s philanthropic efforts were highlighted, including his performances that have raised significant funds for the Hudson Valley Honor Flight.

Attendees enjoyed a delightful array of hors d’oeuvres prepared by Table 21 from Pine Island, NY. Jimmy generously donated items for a raffle to benefit the Chamber, including a bottle of his famous vodka, a signed book, and shirts. The evening concluded with guests having the opportunity to board his tour bus as the sun set beautifully over the pool.
