People Will Recommend Aguibou Karambe be Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that Aguibou Karambe, 22, of Manhattan, pled guilty in Orange County Court to Attempted Robbery in the Second Degree.  Under the plea agreement announced on the record at the time that Karambe pled guilty, the People will recommend that he be sentenced to five (5) years in prison to be followed by three (3) years of post-release supervision when he is sentenced on October 16, 2024.

As alleged in documents filed and statements made in court, on February 28, 2023, Karambe and three other masked men entered the AT&T store in the Village of Monroe.  While inside, one of the men grabbed the clerk by the neck and pushed him into the back office.  One of the men said that he was armed with a gun and held his hand in his jacket pocket.  The men then proceeded to steal various electronics from the store and fled.  Law enforcement were able to track the men to the City of Mount Vernon in Westchester County where they were located with the proceeds of the robbery.  At the plea proceedings, Karambe admitted to attempting to forcibly steal property while aided by another actually present.

District Attorney Hoovler thanked the Monroe Police Department for their investigation and the arrest of the defendant.  District Attorney Hoovler also thanked the City of Mount Vernon Police, the New York Police Department and the Westchester County Police for their assistance in apprehending the defendant.

“This brazen robbery was as dangerous as it was ill-conceived,” said District Attorney David M. Hoovler. “Thankfully, the rapid response of police and their careful investigation ensured that the perpetrators were promptly located and taken into custody.  The safety of our communities relies on proactive policing, coupled with the dedication of my Office to bring these offenders to justice.  I commend the smart and cooperative work of the police agencies involved in this case.”

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Nicholas Mangold.

This criminal charge is merely an allegation that a defendant has committed a violation of the criminal law, and it is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the State of New York’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
