A Column from the Desk of Assemblyman Karl Brabenec (R,C-Deerpark)
Congratulations, graduates! You’ve made it to the end of your long standard education journey. You made it! While your time as a student in grade school might be over, your futures are just beginning. But it’s important to celebrate the accomplishments you’ve made along the way. So much of our modern world is happy to put aside celebration and ceremony, but it’s important to celebrate your moments, especially when you’ve worked so hard for them. Getting an education is critical, and I’m sure we’ve all heard that line time and again from teachers and parents, but it’s absolutely true. The time we spend in the classroom helps us hone the skills essential in the modern world, from reading to writing to our understanding of math and science. These skills help level the playing field and enhance our ability to communicate with others in the world around us, and the foundation you’ve built during your time in school will help you immensely in the many years you live after stepping away from school. I’m hopeful your time in school has also helped you discover a bit about yourselves: what you’re good at, what you like to do, where you want to go. Your potential is boundless, thanks to your hard work and the good fortune of living in U.S., where you can achieve anything you want with the right attitude and enough elbow grease. You might have also heard the expression “the world is your oyster” time and again, but that’s because it’s also true! New technology, new opportunities and new challenges mean you get to overcome and excel over and over again and truly leave your mark behind. I’m so proud of our students in Orange and Rockland counties. You’ve completed the gauntlet of the K-12 education, and your horizon is boundless. I want to wish all graduates well as they begin their journeys. Congratulations, you’ve earned it!
