The Sheriff of Orange County plays a pivotal role in maintaining law and order. As the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the County, the Sheriff has jurisdiction throughout the region, which includes 3 cities, 21 towns, and 19 villages, serving over 400,000 citizens.
The Sheriff’s responsibilities are vast and varied. We are tasked with patrolling unincorporated areas not covered by municipal police forces, enforcing legal judgments such as foreclosures, repossessions, and tax delinquencies, and managing the county jail and inmates. This role is crucial for ensuring public safety and upholding the law.
Additionally, the Sheriff’s office is involved in several specialized units, including K-9, Special Operations Group, Marine and Bike Patrol which all support other law enforcement agencies, crime victims, and our communities. The Sheriff also provides HR 218 certifications, gun license processing, Active Shooter training, Safe Child, and Child Seat Installations. We also provide free site assessments of your religious institutions, schools, and businesses as a proactive measure of safety.
The Sheriff is elected by the citizens every four years, reflecting the democratic process and accountability to the public. The Sheriff’s Office operations can encompass criminal law enforcement, traffic patrol, emergency rescue operations, homeland security programs, SWAT operations, civil emergency response, jail operations, correctional alternative management, courtroom security, and civil litigation process.
