Assemblyman Karl Brabenec (R,C-Deerpark) is sharing the unfortunate news that two of his bills, set to deliver important changes to New York’s approach to new and evolving criminal activity, have been held from debate. The first was a proposal that would create a new felony of criminal possession of fentanyl, a compound that has wrought havoc on New York’s streets and changed thousands of lives for the worse since its introduction into the state.
“Fentanyl has and continues to destroy lives, and I hoped my Democrat colleagues in the Legislature would agree we have a responsibility to fight against it harder, but they evidently do not,” Brabenec said. “Even at low doses, fentanyl can be lethal, and its presence in New York only continues to grow. I worry for the next generations who will have to deal with this problem because leadership in this government clearly doesn’t believe harsher measures against this deadly drug are necessary.”
Brabenec also proposed the Green Light Law Repeal, a measure to bring an end to illegal migrants receiving driver’s licenses. Many of these licenses have been issued through fraud, and because New York is currently not cooperating with federal immigration agencies, the obligation to report undocumented migrants is lessened. In the midst of an ongoing migrant crisis, Brabenec believes the time to repeal is now.
“Green Light was always going to cause problems, particularly with taxpayers having to fund fraud investigations more and more. But with the ongoing migrant crisis this government fails to address meaningfully, I believed it was time for stronger action,” Brabenec said. “Our government has to admit its faults and allow law enforcement to do its job, which starts with denying undocumented immigrants state documentation until they become naturalized. New York cannot continue to afford to be passive on these issues, and I hope my colleagues understand that message soon.”
Assemblyman Brabenec represents the 98th District, which includes the city of Port Jervis, the towns of Deerpark, Greenville, Mount Hope, Wawayanda, Minisink, Warwick, Tuxedo and portions of the towns of Goshen, Monroe and Ramapo.
