The Orange County Chapter of the New York State Archaeological Association will be holding its next meeting on March 15, 2024, starting at 7:30 PM at the Mulberry House Senior Center located at 62-70 West Main Street, Middletown, NY 10940. The Orange County Chapter has been in volved with archaeological projects since 1958. During the year they invite archaeologists and historians to present on a wide variety of topics. The chapter also provides its members the opportunity to participate in archaeological research projects and offers field trips. This meeting is open to the public and will give those who attend the opportunity to get acquainted with our chapter.
The evening’s presentation will be on the area’s Black Dirt Region which has an abundance of well pre served Pleistocene animal remains and Paleo Indian artifacts. Dr. Michael Gramly has been studying the association between Pleistocene animals and Paleo Indians throughout the United States. He will discuss the discoveries made at the Bowser Road Mastodon Site, located within the Black Dirt Region, which is the first recognized ritual kill of a mastodon. Then, he will associate it with other sites within the United States. This is an intriguing presentation which broadens our knowledge of the importance of the Black Dirt Region.
