STATEMENT FROM SENATOR JAMES SKOUFIS

Politics

Last month, I had the privilege of attending the retirement celebration of Warwick’s Town Supervisor Mike Sweeton, who dedicated 21 years of service to his community. His career epitomized the essence of true public service – marked by his collaborative spirit and unshakeable dedication to the people of Warwick. As we bid him farewell from his official duties, I’m compelled to reflect deeply on the monumental impacts of local bipartisan leaders
such as Mike coming together to uplift and strengthen our communities..
One of Supervisor Sweeton’s lasting legacies is the instrumental role he played in the preservation of over 2,500 acres of farmland, retaining Warwick’s beloved rural character. Working hand in hand with fellow officials in his support of Warwick’s Purchase of Development Rights (PDR), this major win bolstered the local agricultural industry, which contributes nearly $35 million annually to the local economy, and ensured the lasting preservation of open space.
Another noteworthy testament of Sweeton’s effective collaboration can be seen in the conversion of the Mid-Orange Correctional Facility to the town’s first business park. The initiative was the product of a synergistic joint effort between Sweeton, the Town’s Board, local and state officials, and a multitude of local businesses. The result was an influx of 200 million dollars in investments and the generation of hundreds of new job opportunities for Warwick
residents. The bustling campus currently houses a sports complex, an adult-cannabis processor, craft beer retailers and more, and the Supervisor and I joined forces this past yearto advance a critical land swap to allow for even more industrial success. My office and I always seek to work closely with local officials and organizations to transform our shared visions into tangible results. It is through humble and collective efforts like those exemplified by outgoing Town Supervisor Mike Sweeton that we maximize impact, and ensure the continued strength and prosperity of our communities. Supervisor Sweeton’s legacy lives on as an enduring source of inspiration as we work to enhance the places we call home. Thank you, Mike!
