Every November 11th, the nation comes together to remember and honor the service and sacrifices of our Veterans. Veterans Day means many things to many people. A marine told me that “Living the life that I’m blessed to have in a country of opportunity.”
Veteran’s Day is a time for us to reflect on and honor the sacrifices made by our heroic men and women of the Armed Forces. It’s not only a time for us to pay homage to those currently serving, but perhaps even more importantly, a time for us to salute those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Veteran’s Day is a time to thank those fighting to stand as the American Flag passes by. To see the inner fire of patriotism and love for the Country they so valiantly served. Veteran’s Day is a time to pay tribute to those who have gone before and laid the foundation for the things that make our country the greatest country in the world.
Veteran’s Day has several meanings. One was shared by a soldier who said, “I get to share in is the comradery of a brotherhood of men and women who volunteered to serve this great nation in the military unconditionally and who sacrificed all things most important to them knowing at any time they could be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice! It gives me a sense of pride and honor to be fortunate enough to be among such an elite group of people. Due to the sacrifice of all Veterans, I enjoy the privilege to sleep better at night, love unconditionally, and pray endlessly knowing this country I call home has what the nation refers to as VETERANS!” Another naval officer shared, “Veterans Day is felt by many as a holy day where we reminisce of the truly great sacrifices, and in some cases the ultimate sacrifice that my brothers and sisters in service were willing to endure so that this country remains the home of the brave and land of the free.”
I watched all day as many paid homage to those who have served and serve now and gave me an overwhelming feeling of being an American. I do hope everyone stopped for a moment and realized that day was not a holiday but a day to say thank you to all who served and those who continue to serve. I watched as groups gathered at various plaques and statues honoring those who did serve and saw the admiration and pride and I say, let’s not just honor our heroes one day a year…let’s honor them every day…maybe by putting our differences aside and come together to make this amazing Country whole again.
