On Sat., June 5 the seniors of Warwick Valley High School put on a car parade celebrating the end of their school careers as Wildcats. Seniors decorated their cars and took to the town honking horns and cheering as passing cars and pedestrians waved to them.
Due to the pandemic the schools have been dealing with the virtual classes and students have had to handle limited capacity for events. The car parade was an idea the senior class had, and the administration thought it was a wonderful way for the seniors to share their school spirit.
“The seniors wanted to do this, and we thought it was a great idea,” said High School Principal Marguerite Fusco. “I’m going to miss the Class of 2021 for their spirit and resilience these last few years. They are a wonderful group of kids, and I will never forget them.”
Several seniors participated in the parade with their cars fully decorated in school spirit and having some laughs with their friends that they have known forever. Students were reminiscing on the memories they made at the school and even about the things they will miss.
“I came today to be a part of the school spirit and to be with my senior class,” said Jared Torres. He will miss playing for the Warwick football team.
“The parade is something we haven’t seen before in another senior class and it is a great thing to be apart of,” added Senior Dominick D’Amico.
The parade started from the high school parking lot and headed down West Street Ext., turning right onto County Rte. 1, then left onto Rte. 94. The parade continued onto Oakland Ave. all the way down Main St. in the Village of Warwick. The procession ended at Park Avenue Elementary School.
The Warwick Police department assisted with the parade, making sure the roads were cleared for the event. Sergeant Michael Kearns and Officer Steve Helmrich escorted the parade on the Town of Warwick Police Motorcycles. The Warwick Fire Department, under the direction of Mike Contaxis, assisted the Police Department with keeping the roads clear, allowing the parade to proceed safely and smoothly.
Members of the school staff also participated in the parade and joined in the celebration of this senior class. Many students will miss the teachers and administrators they have at Warwick Valley.
“I will miss the teachers and all the administrators at Warwick as they care so much about the students,” stated Dominick D’Amico.
The Seniors have more fun events to look forward to such as prom as well as graduation which will be held in person. Congratulations to the Warwick Valley Class of 2021!
