The Skatepark Project (formerly known as the Tony Hawk Foundation) has officially awarded their Spring 2021 Project Recognition Grant for $1,000 to the GWL Skatepark Corp for the development of an 8,000 sq. ft. public skatepark, located off of Windermere Ave. near the CVS field in Greenwood Lake.

To-date, The Skatepark Project has awarded over $10 million to more than 600 public skatepark projects in all 50 states, and $150,000 to support the Skateistan program in Afghanistan, Cambodia, and South Africa. Almost 600 recipients of grants from The Skatepark Project have opened their skateparks. These parks receive more than six-million visits annually by youth who benefit from active lifestyle and camaraderie the facilities promote.

The Skatepark Project had followed GWL Skatepark’s efforts since day one and praised the GWL Skatepark’s efforts, with Alec Beck, Manager of Public Education, saying, “We’re so impressed with the quality of your message and what you’re doing in your community. Your team is killing it!”

GWL Skatepark Corp is truly honored to have been selected and recognized by such a prolific and respected organization. This Project Recognition Grant adds validity to the advocacy work and energy of GWL Skatepark and its impressive group of local supporters. GWL Skatepark Corp has reached 60% of its fundraising goal, primarily through contributions from the community and local businesses.  GWL Skatepark’s partnerships with local government, businesses and local youth has created a unique synergy of advocacy and education, while also creating annual events that are now considered staple events of the community.

The long term vision of the GWL Skatepark is that the park will be an epicenter of the community and will not only be used as a skatepark, but also as a place for community events/gatherings, youth outreach, introductory lessons, camps, and contests.

GWL Skatepark Corp is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.  The skatepark will be built in memory of Dale Hirrel, a popular local youth who loved skateboarding and always dreamed of having a park in his local town. Dale was tragically killed in a car accident in 2016, and a large part of the objective is to make that dream a reality and keep his memory alive.
