Mayor Harter: Watch for Coyotes

Local News News & Updates

During this time of the year our local wildlife is on the move looking for food, territory and to reproduce. Many of us own pets and I’d like to remind everyone to be aware of this especially with one of our larger wild neighbors, the coyote.

As I heard them howling and yipping in the Black Dirt over the weekend, I was reminded of last year when my dog was attacked by one. He was let out before bed and when it was all over, he had several puncture marks in his back leg from the encounter.

He’s a big dog and was able to fend off the coyote but not every pet is an 80lb Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Please do not leave your pets out unsupervised at night or leave food for pets outside. This can attract unwanted visitors that can lead to unnecessary conflicts with our wild neighbors.

The official start of spring is right around the corner and with it comes “springing” ahead. Daylight savings time begins on the night of Sun., Mar. 14 so remember to set you clocks ahead before you go to bed! And finally, don’t forget to vote on Tues., Mar. 16 in your local Village of Florida elections! Polls are open from 12 noon to 9 p.m. in the Seward Senior Center, located behind the Village Hall on 33 South Main St.
