Political discord and polarization reached its apex this past week with the illegal storming of the U.S. Capital, inflamed by the words of our President. Five Americans died. The Jaycees, a young person’s civic group I belonged to many years ago, had a line in its creed that is so relevant to today. It said, “We are a nation of laws rather than of men”. It seems these days there is a tendency to pick and choose the laws we like, ignoring those we don’t like. Our Federal representatives, the President and the Congress – both parties, are complicate in this by failing to debate, compromise and pass or amend laws for the betterment of our country. They all need to start doing their jobs. We must return to the spirit our founders laid the ground work for. We must reinstate an atmosphere where we can express our views without the risk of being bullied or ridiculed. We must return to respecting others views. Violence has no place in our society, especially as it relates to solving political differences. The lawbreakers must be held accountable, and the rule of law must always prevail.
