Supervisor Sweeton: Continue to be Vigilant

Local News News & Updates

Covid-19 remains a serious threat and remains with us.  This is not the time for us to let our guard down, especially as we approach the time where we will be forced by temperatures to spend more time indoors.  Please, please wear a mask whenever you cannot remain more than six feet from another person or are in any enclosed space.  Wash your hands frequently, and if you experience any symptoms  (see www.CDC.gov), call your medical provider.  Let’s all try to stay safe!

On June 12, 2020 Governor Cuomo issued Executive Order 203 (www.governor.ny.gov/executiveorders) that orders any municipality with a police department to perform a comprehensive review of the department’s policies, practices and procedures, and   develop a plan to improve upon these policies, if warranted. The Chief Executive Officer of the government, in this case the Supervisor, is charged with considering several specific things, among which are the use of force policy, procedural justice, community outreach, violence prevention and focused deterrence. The Town must consult with stakeholders that include the police, district attorney, local elected officials and members of the community.  A plan must then be prepared, offered for public comment, and then adopted by the Town Board by April 1, 2021.

I have empaneled a cross section of our community to undertake this review, and the first meeting will be held on Mon., Oct, 26 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.  The public will be able to view the meeting live, via Zoom.  A link will be posted on the Town’s website at www.townofwarwick.org the week prior to the first meeting.

The next regular meeting of the Town Board will be held on Thurs., Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Warwick Town Hall, 132 Kings Highway.
