Governor Cuomo has set a deadline of April 1, 2021 for local governments in New York State to reform their police forces. What will follow will be the usual bureaucratic responses to increase diversity, provide sensitivity training and watch anti-racism videos produced by some profit-is-our-mission corporation.
I have one suggestion to reform the police forces. In light of the recent unjustified killings of people at the hands and knees of police, the words “To Protect and Serve” should be taken off of every police vehicle. The endemic racism shown by too many police officers in this country abrogates any right for any police vehicle to wear those four words.
