Beth & Mathew Buckley: 2020 Celts of the Year

      The Greenwood Lake Gaelic Cultural Society, celebrating its 44th year, will host its annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance on Sat., Mar. 7, at 7:30 p.m. The event will take place at American Legion Post 1443, located at 40 Mountain Lakes Rd., in Greenwood Lake. Beth and Mathew Buckley will be honored as the 2020 Celts of the Year.

     Mathew and Beth Buckley are life-long residents of Greenwood Lake.  They are raising their children, Matthew, 16, and Geraldine, 9, around the corner from Mathew’s childhood home. Mathew and Beth are proud to live in this community where they are surrounded by many family members. Both graduated from Tuxedo High School.

      The Buckleys are active members of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, and participate in Greenwood Lake Little League and the Gaelic-sponsored Greenwood Lake Soccer Club. In addition to being active members of the Greenwood Lake Gaelic Cultural Society, Mathew and Beth enjoy supporting the many community-based charities in Greenwood Lake.

      Mathew’s parents, Geraldine and the late Dennis Buckley, moved to the area in the late 1960s from the Bronx, NY, in order to raise their five young sons. Mathew, brother Dennis, and sister, Katheleen, were born in Orange County, completing their family of eight children. Mathew’s paternal grandfather emigrated from County Cork and his paternal grandmother was from County Kerry. On his mother’s side, Mathew’s great-grandparents are from County Mead.

      Beth’s maternal grandfather emigrated from Galway and her paternal grandfather emigrated from Limerick. Her maternal great-grandparents emigrated from Galway.

      After joining the Gaelic Cultural Society in 2011, Mathew served as Vice President and President, in addition to holding other positions. Beth also joined the Gaelic Cultural Society in 2011 and is looking forward to serving the Club as Historian.

     Mathew and Beth are honored and humbled to be recognized as the 2020 Celts of the Year. The Gaelic Cultural Society looks forward to celebrating Beth and Mathew Buckley and continuing to foster its heritage and bring Irish Culture to the area.

     The evening will feature a corned beef and cabbage dinner, beer, wine and soda, and live entertainment by Susan and Gerard. The cost is $40 per person, advanced ticket sales only. For tickets, contact Lexi O’Rourke at 595-1145.
